Richard C. Shirley

Richard C. Shirley, age 91, of Cicero, IN and formerly of Kokomo, IN passed away October 29, 2018 at I.U. Health at Tipton, IN.

He was born October 18, 1927 at Kokomo, IN to Clarence Ivan and Alma May (Kulow) Shirley.  He was a graduate of Kokomo High School and then served his country honorably in the U.S. Army.

In 1946 he started Shirley Home Furnishings Store at Kokomo, IN and with his family managed the store for over forty years.  He was active in and past president of the National Home Furnishing Association.  Richard was also a private pilot and free time would usually find him flying.  His family attested that he was an excellent pilot and traversed the United States, usually with his wife by his side.  He was a member of the Kokomo Pilots Club, Kokomo Country Club and Kokomo Elks Club.

He married Mary Elizabeth (McElroy) Shirley on April 3, 1948.  She preceded him in death September 15, 2009.  In addition to his wife and parents he was also preceded in death by a brother: Robert Shirley.

Surviving him is a son: Richard Bradley Shirley and wife Jackie of Elizabeth, CO, daughters: Nancy Leah Shirley of Cicero, IN, Robbyn Elizabeth Burton of Orlando, FL, and Mary Angela Shirley of Carmel, IN, grandchildren: Mary Dena Shirley, Brian Richard Burton, and Laura Elizabeth Burton.

A gathering for family and friends will be held Friday, November 2, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. at Hartley Funeral Homes Cicero Chapel, 209 West Jackson Street, Cicero, IN 46034.  Burial will follow at Cicero Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society for Hamilton County, 1721 Pleasant Street, Suite B, Noblesville, IN 46060-3621.  You may send condolences at www.hartleyfuneralhomes.com.
