Charles Daniel Smeltzer, age 96, of Arcadia, IN passed away peacefully April 23, 2021 at his home with his family by his side.
He was born September 28, 1924 near Arcadia, IN to Ival Daniel and Viola Jessie (Gasho) Smeltzer. He attended Arcadia schools and graduated from Arcadia High School with the Class of 1942. To help his country during WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He was involved in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign and the European African Campaign. His active duty was almost six years.
Upon returning home he became employed at Allison Division of General Motors as a machinist. Being an industrious person he became caretaker of the Arcadia Cemetery where he sold grave spaces, staked the spaces when needed for a burial, kept records for the cemetery and oversaw the grounds keeping chores. He also had his own lawn mowing business.
Chuck, as he was fondly known was an accomplished woodworker. He made small furniture items and hand carved wooden trucks and cars. When his sons were interested in sports and other activities he became a Cub Scout Leader, and also coached Little League teams.
Chuck was an active member of the Arcadia Church of the Brethren most of his life. He taught Sunday School Classes and also served as a deacon. During his life he interacted with many people and they found him to be wise, thoughtful, soft spoken and always kind.
He married Ivagene (Revis) Smeltzer on June 9, 1944. She preceded him in death February 7, 2020. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandchild, a brother: Ivan Richard Smeltzer and sisters: Maxine Bowser and Eileen Wolfe.
Surviving him is a daughter: Carol Tynes, of Lapel, IN, sons: Stephen Smeltzer of Whiteland, IN, William Smeltzer of Indianapolis, IN and Brian Smeltzer of Clarks Hill, IN, a brother: Norman Smeltzer of Arcadia, IN, sisters: Mardelle McBane of Atlanta, IN, Jane Ann Dellinger of Tipton, IN and Martha Knapp of Arcadia, IN,
11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 29, 2021 at 12:00 Noon at Arcadia Church of the Brethren, 8989 East 266th Street, Arcadia, IN 46030 with Visitation from 11:00 A.M. until time of the service. Burial will follow at the Arcadia Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church.
