Doris Ada Whisler

Doris Ada Whisler, age 94, of Cicero, IN passed away September 3, 2020 at Riverwalk Village at Noblesville, IN. 

She was born January 1, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York to Royston and Viola (Johnson) Porter.  She attended schools in Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn Girls School. 

She met her future husband in New York during WWII while he was stationed there.  Upon being honorably discharged from the service, they continued writing to each other.  Doris then ended up moving to Cicero from Brooklyn which was a completely different environment.  Upon marrying Oliver Thomas Whisler on January 6, 1946, she began her role as wife and homemaker, and without the amenities she was used to such as indoor plumbing. They decided to live their lives in Cicero and raise their family there, so they built a house together and she lived there for over 70 years.  She had also held various jobs, mainly in retail sales including Marsh and Kroger stores, Zehner Shoe Store, Willits Dry Goods Store and Port Cicero Shops. 

She was a member of Cicero United Methodist Church. 

Doris was a very independent woman, still mowing her own lawn and working in retail type jobs until she was 91 years of age.  She was known to have an outgoing, friendly personality and loved meeting and visiting with people. She was also known to be a snazzy dresser. 

Doris had a dog named Oliver that she named after her husband who was also her best friend.  She would walk Oliver two or three times a day, even in the rain or snow.   

Surviving her is a daughter: Kathy (Mark) Whisler-Roper of Cicero, IN, sons: Michael L (Kristie)  Whisler of Noblesville, IN, Larry E. Whisler of Cicero, IN and Tim Whisler of Cicero, IN, grandchildren: Brandy, Wesley, Megan, Kendra, and Olivia, and great-grandchildren: Willow, Hayden, Gwynn, Molly, Vivyan and Guy. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and a daughter-in-law: Kristina Whisler. 

A time of visitation will be on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 from 12:00 noon until 2:00 P.M. at Hartley Funeral Homes Cicero Chapel, 209 W Jackson Street, Cicero, IN 46034 followed by graveside rites at Cicero Cemetery.  Pastor Mark Knapp will officiate.  Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 50 East 91st Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46209-4830 or Disabled American Veterans.  You may send condolences at http://www.hartleyfuneralhomes.com.
