On Saturday evening, February 19, 2022, John Joseph Juriss, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away at age 90.
John was born on March 12, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to John and Anna (Kapilla) Juriss. He attended both Culver Military Academy for boys and Missouri Military Academy. He pursued and earned a Bachelor's Degree in economics from DePaul University. He then joined the Chicago Police Force and proudly served the city for almost 30 years.
On October 4,1958 John married Shirley Adele (Lerner) Juriss and together they raised three children: John Joseph Juriss, Jr., Laura Ann Juriss, and Kay Marie (Juriss) Mares.
John enjoyed reading and researching a wide array of topics. He dedicated himself to listening to his audible Bible and genuinely relished quizzing his pastor about a story or concept he found in the Bible.
John never met a stranger, often forming friendships with those he met during his daily forays around the community. His extensive reading gave him a quest for knowledge and he often held lively conversations with others, sometimes taking an opposing view to spark debate. But he also spoke highly of his friends and neighbors in his community and of his church family at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Arcadia, IN. He was always ready to help others with an issue or concern. These attributes endeared him to many that will sorely miss him.
John was preceded in death by his father and mother, a daughter: Laura Ann Juriss, and a sister: LaVerne Voelz.
He is survived by a son: John Joseph (Kathy) Juriss, Jr. of grand Park, Illinois, a daughter: Kay Marie (David, M.D.) Mares of Lapel, Indiana, and grandsons: Tom Mares and Joe Mares plus several nieces and nephews from the Tierney family.
Funeral services will be held March 5, 2022 at 10:30 A.M. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Indiana with Pastor Thomas Ludwig officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church. Burial will occur at a later date at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Arcadia.
